Durango, CO is located in La Plata County. Durango is named after Durango, Mexico. The word "Durango" originates from the Basque word "Urango" meaning "water town".
Durango is burrowed in the Animas River Valley and beset by the San Juan Mountain range. The Animas River that flows through Durango brings lots of attention to the area; great fly fishing, rafting adventures, kayaking, and canoing. Other outdoor activities popular to Durango include hiking, mountain biking, road biking, backpacking, rock climbing, hunting, off-roading, year-round fishing, kayaking, rafting and golfing. In the winter, Durango has easy access to five major ski areas, including the Durango Mountain Resort and Telluride ski resort.
Another reason to relocate to Durango would be is Mesa Verde National Park only 35 miles away. Mesa Verde is known for it's historic cliff dwellings of the Anazazi Indians. Another attraction known to Durango is the Snowdown Festival, an event which includes fireworks and a parade. The centerpiece, the parade, usually occurs the last Friday of January or the first Friday of February.
