Denver is the capital and most populous city of Colorado. Denver is located in the South Platte River Valley on the High Plains just east of the Front Range of the Southern Rocky Mountains. Residents of Denver are known as Denverites. Denver is nicknamed "The Mile-High City" because its official elevation (marked on the steps of the Colorado State Capitol) is exactly one mile-5280 feet.
Many of Denver's parks were acquired from state lands. Some of the most popular are Washington Park, Cheesman Park, and City Park. In addition to the parks within Denver itself, the city acquired land for mountain parks. The most famous being Red Rocks Park, which is known just as much for its scenery as its musical history revolving around the Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
Denver's many colleges and universities range in age and study programs. The city boasts Roman Catholic and Jewish institutions, as well as a well-respected health sciences school. In addition to those schools within the city, there are a number of schools located throughout the surrounding metro area. Some of these schools are: The University of Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver, University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, Community College of Denver, Art Institute of Colorado, and Regis University.
Denver is also home of a variety of sports teams. The Denver Broncos are the NFL team. Colorado Rockies play at Coors Field in the MLB. And sharing the Pepsi Center the Avalanche (NHL) and the Denver Nuggets (NBA) draws crowds.
Part of the thrill of living downtown is being a part of the city's heartbeat. And Downtown Denver doesn't disappoint. Denver boasts more than 200 stores and 300 restaurants, not to mention a vibrant and nationally-recognized performing arts center, beautiful new sports arenas and art galleries of all shapes and sizes tucked inside city blocks and neighborhood alleyways.
