Stop Scams
RoommateShop® Cares About You!
- First, what are scams?
- Thank you for using our service. We felt it was our responsibility to make you aware of the following online scam. It has been brought to our attention that certain individuals have been using online roommate services and message boards in order to commit check fraud. They may try to convince unsuspecting people who are in search of renters or roommates to send them money.
It goes something like this: --- The supposed roommate may pose as an interested renter and offer to send you a rent/deposit check or money order that is more than the amount you are asking for. They will then ask you to send them back the money they have overpaid. These people are usually from out of the country and we have noticed that some are claiming to be in some cases, models or in the entertainment industry. They also tend to use incorrect English and have horrible spelling. We are doing everything we can in order to keep these people out of our system, but we ask that you keep your eyes and ears open for any "fishy" activity that you might notice.
A few things you can do to avoid being a victim: - Only accept the amount of money you are asking for. If you are asking for a $500 deposit, and they send you more than $500, do not accept the check.
- Wait until the check has actually cleared (this could take 4-6 weeks for checks that are from foreign banks). Even though the money looks like it has been deposited into your account, contact your bank to make sure the check cleared and that they have received the money.
- Call the bank that the check has originated from. Make sure the bank is legitimate and that the account number is valid.
- Get a valid phone number. If they provide you with a number that is not valid or have an excuse as to why they cannot be reached by phone, be concerned. Be careful. Don't send any money to anyone you are not fully comfortable with. Don't get burned!!

Thank you all, I was accepted to CU just a week before classes began. It wasn't easy to do, but thankfully the most difficult task was made the easiest. I really appriciate everything. Thanks again,
